A trip to Santa Barbara Castle in Alicante gone horribly right

Fear of heights? Check. Vertigo? Check. Let's visit the Santa Barbara Castle in Alicante! After all, what can go wrong? With only 155 meters (~500 ft) high, it should be a walk in the park (actually, a walk to the castle). Nothing could be further from the truth. Once you're up there, looking down may trigger vertigo in some people. It's because the castle is built on a very steep hill. Nonetheless, it was a very memorable experience. The Santa Barbara Castle in Alicante is free to visit. There's even a free small parking lot at the foot of the castle (be wary of scammers who pretend to work for the city, and supposedly help you park. They're NOT associated with the city of Alicante and demand payment when you pick up your car!! Ignore them or threaten to involve the police). To ensure a spot, come early. (Or take a bus to avoid parking altogether).

It's possible to drive to the lower part of the structure to drop off or pick up people. However, parking is not allowed up there. If you have trouble walking on steep hills, there's an elevator available that's €2.70 per person and takes you directly inside the castle.

Once you've made it all the way to the top, you're greeted with stunning views of the city of Alicante.

The ceramic museum inside

The Santa Barbara castle in Alicante has a small museum that highlights the ceramic works of various periods of the castle. There is also a souvenir shop that sells not only the usual souvenirs one may expect but also local wines and chocolates from around the area!

The souvenir shop is a mandatory stop if you want to enter or exit the castle

Although there are some indoor areas, it would've been nice to see more of the inside

La Torreta is the oldest part of the castle, dating back to the 9th century

No matter which direction you walk to, expect incredible views along the way!

Final verdict: Although the castle is amazing, there aren't many places to visit inside the castle itself. Most indoor areas of the castle are closed off to the public. It's mainly the surroundings that make this visit worthwhile.
